Why south-facing gardens get the most sun

At Lancaster's latitude (54°N), the sun arcs across the southern sky from east to west. A south-facing garden intercepts this arc at its widest point — which means sun from late morning right through to mid-afternoon or beyond.

The standout south-facing pubs in Lancaster are the city centre classics: The Sun Hotel & Bar on Church Street genuinely earns its name — its south-facing courtyard catches sun from about 11am on clear days. The Borough on Dalton Square is the liveliest south-facing garden in the city, with heaters and a covered section extending the season.

Further afield, The Dalton Arms in Glasson Dock (210°) and several of the Bolton-le-Sands pubs offer south-facing gardens with more open skies and no urban buildings to interrupt the sun.
