The Lancaster Canal runs right through the heart of Lancaster city, and the towpath walk from the Penny Street basin through to the White Cross is one of the best urban canal walks in the north-west. Flat, traffic-free, and ending at a pub that's been here since the canal was built.
The Walk: Lancaster Canal from Penny Street Basin · Easy · 0.5–1 mile · Flat, surfaced towpath
Start at the Lancaster Canal basin on Penny Street — there's parking nearby and it's a short walk from Lancaster train station. Drop onto the towpath heading north and follow the canal through the city. You'll pass under a series of old stone bridges as the canal cuts through Lancaster — the industrial heritage of the route is part of its appeal.
After about half a mile you'll see the White Cross on your right, set back from the towpath in a converted mill building. The beer garden is right on the canal edge.
The White Cross is set in a converted cotton mill from Lancaster's industrial heyday, with original mill features throughout. The canal-side beer garden is sheltered, covered in parts, and has direct views along the canal. Phil's 21 April verification recorded it as 48° NE: morning and early-afternoon sun, then a hard shadow line at roughly 16:30 BST in April. Dog friendly. Good food. Large garden with heaters for cooler days.
💡 The White Cross courtyard faces north-east (48°). It works best from morning through early afternoon; in April, the hard shadow line reaches the courtyard at roughly 16:30 BST. The covered section means it's usable even on cloudy days. Check live sun conditions on the Golden Pints tracker before you head out.
The Canal in Both Directions
The Lancaster Canal is one of the great walking and cycling routes of the north-west. Head south from the White Cross and the towpath takes you through Aldcliffe towards Glasson Dock (5 miles). Head north and you're into open countryside within minutes, with the route eventually reaching Carnforth and beyond towards Kendal.
For a longer day, the Water Witch is about a mile south of the White Cross along the towpath — both pubs in the same walk is a very good afternoon. For the wider Lancaster and Bay-area list — see the Golden Pints tracker →
