The Water Witch sits along the Lancaster Canal towpath, tucked behind a converted Victorian stable building that gives the garden its sheltered, almost secretive feel. The terrace faces south-west (225°), which means it starts catching direct sun from late morning and stays in sunshine right through to the golden hour — typically until 8pm or later in midsummer.
The Water Witch is featured in our guide to the best Lancaster pubs — our editorial pick of the 17 city pubs grouped by character.
The Water Witch has a south-west-facing terrace (225°), which means it typically catches the best sun late morning through the afternoon. The large outdoor space is sheltered, making it a reasonable option even on breezier days.
Golden Pints tracks the sun position for this pub in real time — check the live tracker to see whether it's currently in sun, partial sun, or shade before heading out.
The Water Witch is well placed if you're already around Lancaster's city centre, the canal, the castle quarter, and the university. It can work well as part of a wider afternoon or evening out in Lancaster.

Factual context for The Water Witch — heritage, what's on site, and how the sun reaches the garden. Sourced from public records; no subjective claims.
The pub occupies a former Lancaster Canal Company stable block on the Aldcliffe Road towpath. The stables once supported the canal's fast packet boat service, including the original Water Witch — a passenger packet boat introduced in 1833 that carried up to 120 passengers between Preston and Kendal, pulled by horses changed every four to five miles at trackside stables like this one. The building took its present name and pub use in 1978 and was the first canalside pub on this stretch of the Lancaster Canal.
Listed by CAMRA on WhatPub. The terraced beer garden runs along the towpath edge, with food served and real ale on. The pub is dog-friendly, family-friendly, accessible, and has a fire pit.
The garden bearing of 225° (south-west) gives the terrace direct sun from late morning through to sunset on clear days, with peak exposure across the afternoon. The 140° open angle means the sun sweeps across most of the seating area rather than narrowing onto a single section.
Around 11 minutes' walk from Lancaster railway station. Walking route on Google Maps.
