Vintage by the Sea — also known as Morecambe Vintage by the Sea 2026 — is Morecambe's annual celebration of mid-20th-century style. Vintage fashion, music, dancing, and the kind of seaside atmosphere that the town was built for. The festival takes over the promenade each September, drawing visitors from across the country for a weekend of swing bands, Lindy Hop, and magnificently dressed people.
The setting matters. Morecambe Bay has one of the most spectacular western horizons in England, and in September the light on the water in the late afternoon and evening is something genuinely special. The festival makes the most of it — and the right pub makes it better.
All of the pubs in this guide are tracked on the Golden Pints live tracker. Check it on the day to see which gardens have the best sun at your planned visit time — particularly useful for catching the golden hour over the bay.
The Midland Hotel — Festival Headquarters
Marine Road West, Morecambe LA4 4BU
If you're attending Vintage by the Sea, The Midland Hotel is the obvious first stop — and genuinely one of the finest places to drink in England during a September afternoon.
The 1933 Art Deco building is a Grade II* listed masterpiece, lovingly restored to its original glory. The west-facing sun terrace (bearing: 270°) has an uninterrupted 180° view across Morecambe Bay to the Lake District fells — on a clear September day, the light from this terrace is extraordinary.
The Midland is also the spiritual home of Vintage by the Sea itself — the festival and the building were made for each other. Art Deco architecture, bay views, and a crowd in 1940s and 1950s clothes. It doesn't get more Morecambe than this. Book a table on the terrace in advance for the weekend — it fills up fast during the festival.
The Palatine — Proper Seaside Local
The Crescent, Morecambe LA4 5BZ
The Palatine is the traditional Morecambe option if The Midland is full or you want something with fewer tourists and more locals. Large west-northwest facing beer garden (bearing: 260°), promenade views, honest pub prices, and a proper local atmosphere. Less polished than The Midland, more comfortable. Good ales and the kind of seafront setting that never gets old.
The Pier Hotel — Live Music on the Bay
Marine Road, Morecambe LA4 4DG
The Pier Hotel is a dog-friendly seafront community pub with live entertainment seven days a week — making it a natural fit for a festival weekend. Beer garden faces due west (bearing: 270°) with direct bay views. The live music programme means the atmosphere during Vintage by the Sea weekend is usually excellent, with the indoor and outdoor spaces feeling part of the same event.
The York Hotel — Afternoon Sun on Marine Road Central
Marine Road Central, Morecambe LA4 5BS
The York Hotel is a friendly traditional local with a south-west facing beer garden (bearing: 230°) — a useful alternative if you'd rather catch afternoon sun than wait for the sunset crowd. A short walk from The Midland along the promenade, so easy to combine with a festival stroll.
Kings Arms & The Hurley Flyer — Further Along the Bay
Kings Arms, Marine Road East, Morecambe LA4 5AT
If the seafront gets busy, head slightly out of the festival core. Kings Arms Morecambe sits on Marine Road East with bay views and a proper local atmosphere, while The Hurley Flyer in Westgate has a large south-facing garden with a play area — a solid choice for families attending the festival with kids in tow.
The Dog & Partridge — Bare's Community Local
Princes Crescent, Bare LA4 6BZ
A 15-minute walk east along the promenade, The Dog & Partridge in Bare is where locals who want to dodge festival crowds end up. Village feel, community garden, and Morecambe's best informal Sunday atmosphere — worth the extra walk if you're staying the full weekend.
The Eric Morecambe — Budget Option With the Same View
Euston Road, Morecambe LA4 5DD
If you need to pace yourself financially across a full festival weekend, The Eric Morecambe (Wetherspoons) offers the same bay view as The Midland at significantly lower prices. Large outdoor terrace, west-facing, unobstructed view of the bay. No one's pretending the atmosphere matches The Midland, but the sunset looks identical.

Timing Your Visit Around the Sun
All of Morecambe's best beer gardens face west — directly into the evening sun over the bay. For Vintage by the Sea, this means the sweet spot is the late afternoon and early evening: roughly 4pm to sunset, when the light turns golden and the bay looks its best.
Check the Golden Pints tracker about 90 minutes before sunset on festival days — all the west-facing Morecambe gardens will be showing high sun scores and golden hour badges. The Midland, The Palatine, and The Pier Hotel will all be competing for the top spot. Pick the atmosphere that suits you.
September sunsets in Morecambe typically fall between 7:00pm and 7:45pm depending on the exact date. The golden hour window — when the light turns amber over the bay — is roughly 60–90 minutes before that. That's the window to be on a Morecambe terrace with a drink in hand.
Getting to Morecambe
Morecambe is 10 minutes from Lancaster by train (direct service, runs frequently) or 20 minutes by bus on the 2, 2A, or X1 services. For festival weekend, the train is the sensible option — no parking, and the walk from Morecambe station to the promenade is a pleasant 10 minutes.
All of the pubs in this guide are on the Golden Pints tracker alongside the wider 59-pub Lancaster and Bay-area list. Use the area filter to select Morecambe, sort by sun score where verified, and check the live golden hour badges as the afternoon turns to evening.
